Frederick County – A Saturday night two-vehicle crash in Frederick County claimed two lives and left three others injured.  The crash occurred at approximately 6:50 p.m. in the 3300 block of Papermill Road.

According to a media release from Virginia State Police, a 1999 Ford F150 pickup was traveling east on Papermill Road when it crossed the center line and struck head-on a westbound 2001 Chevrolet Suburban.
The driver of the Ford pickup truck, a 36-year-old Winchester, Va., male, whom police declined to identify, was transported to Winchester Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. He was wearing a seat belt. Charges are pending at this time.

The Suburban’s driver, Michael K. Mercer, 59, of Stephens City, Va., died at the scene. The Suburban’s front-seat passenger, Jimmy Kilbourne Sr., 67, of Winchester, Va., was transported to Winchester Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

A 67-year-old female passenger, Vicki Mercer, was transported to the hospital , and is in serious condition, according to a family member.  A  17-year-old male passenger was flown to Fairfax Inova for treatment, and remains in serious condition, according to a family member.  All four of the Suburban’s occupants were wearing seat belts.

Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller said trooper A.W. Backus continues investigating the accident.
